Day 1

After a couple of false starts (we forgot the cds), we finally made it out of springfield and then Illinois. Then we got stuck. We got stopped on I 270 because of an accident that occurred about 100 cars in front of us and we were about 500 feet away from the nearest exit. Unfortunately we remained stopped for over an hour. They had closed down all the lanes on I270, both east and west so that the firetrucks could get to the accident. We of course took some pictures because what else were we going to do. If you look closely in the picture on the left you can see the fireman on the ladder guiding the water into the semi.












We uneventfully made it to Kansas City and determined that we do not want to live there, but we did get some nice photos with some giant shuttlecocks and a giant needle and button, finally I can sew a button now that they have a needle big enough for me.

Our next plan was to see the largest ball of twine in Weston, MO unfortunately the town of Weston is not so inviting, they have very narrow roads and prefer for you to go 10-15 mph. There were no signs for the giant ball of twine, so we left. We then headed up to Omaha and got a picture of the largest coffee pot and headed across Nebraska. It was so late at the time that we could not see much of omaha or lincoln. Nebraska lets you go 65mph in their work zones and has a speed limit of 75 mph, which we of course did not go because then we would have gotten ridiculously bad gas mileage, but it was nice having such a high one that you knew you would not get pulled over for going too fast.

We pulled into Grand Island, NE a little after 11pm. Apparently it is a very popular place to stay as most of the hotels were completely booked. We managed to find one though and it was nonsmoking. I don't think we could both walk in it at the same time, but it had a bed so we were able to sleep and that was really all we expected out of the place. I think there may have been a Christian convention in the area, maybe at Concordia, since we were not too far from Seward.
