Now we are engaged in a great epicurian fantasy, testing whether that cookie, or any cookie, so conceived and so dedicated, can taste supreme.
Those cookies were the Rosemary Butter Cookies, and they were really more like three score and twelve hours ago, but that doesn't sound as good. This year we made a total of five different cookies, four of which came from Martha Stewart's website. My personal theory is that when she was in jail the prison warden made her be his personal pastry chef (or her -- women can be prison wardens, too), and she got to design and test a whole bunch of tasty cookies. We also made Lime Meltaways, Chocolate Snowcaps (we nixed the espresso), pfeffernuessen, and the ridiculously tasty ginger cookies from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. The rosemary cookies are probably the most interesting; when you eat one, you think to yourself "huh, that was better than I thought it was, but still nothing special." Two hours later, you realize that you've eaten five of them and crave five more. They REALLY grow on you. But the ginger cookies still reign supreme (we've been watching a lot of iron chef on the internet - from whence "reign supreme")
We donate a lot (hopefully most!) of our cookies to our church, who distribute them to homeless shelters. We were feeling pretty good about our five different kinds of cookies and all, but when we got there, someone had dropped off fifteen plates of cookies, all of them different. Of course, I'm guessing none of them were as tasty as the ginger cookies, but still... someone did a LOT of dishes at that house.
